Discord embeds: og tags, theme colour and large images
Discord builds its embed from your og tags plus one extra — theme-color. Here is how to control the colour bar, the image size and the text.
Key takeaways
- Discord reads og:site_name, og:title, og:description and og:image — no Discord-specific tags required.
- A name="theme-color" meta tag sets the coloured bar down the left of the embed.
- Large images need a wide image and, on some setups, twitter:card=summary_large_image.

When a link lands in a Discord channel, Discord's crawler reads your Open Graph tags and builds the familiar embed: site name in grey, title in blue, description below, image underneath, and a thin colour bar down the left edge. Everything except the colour bar comes from standard tags.
The tags Discord maps
- og:site_name — the small grey line at the top.
- og:title — the blue linked headline.
- og:description — the body text, the most generous of any platform at around 200 characters.
- og:image — the image under the text; wide images display large.
- og:url — where the headline links.
The colour bar
Discord reads a theme-color meta tag — the same one browsers use for UI tinting — and uses it for the left border of the embed. It is the one piece of Discord embed design you control with a tag that is not Open Graph.
<meta name="theme-color" content="#FF5C28" /> <meta property="og:site_name" content="Example" /> <meta property="og:title" content="A headline under 60 characters" /> <meta property="og:description" content="Discord gives you the most room — use it." /> <meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/card.png" />
Why your image shows small
Discord displays the image large when it is wide enough and the page declares the large-card intent it recognises from Twitter's convention. If your embed shows a small thumbnail on the right, export the image at 1200x630 and add twitter:card set to summary_large_image.
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image" />
Caching in channels
Discord caches embeds per URL, so a fixed tag can keep showing the old card in a channel that already saw the link. Verify the tags first with the checker on this site, then share a URL Discord has not seen — a query parameter is enough — to see the fresh embed.
