iMessage link previews: why Apple shows a bare grey box

When your link shows in iMessage with no image and no title, Apple's stricter fetch behaviour is usually the cause — not your tags.

Key takeaways

  • iMessage builds the preview on the sender's device, so a slow or unusual server response fails where other platforms succeed.
  • The most common causes are missing og tags, a slow first byte, redirect chains and images served with the wrong content type.
  • If the grey box appears only in iMessage, test the raw image URL — Apple refuses images that error, redirect oddly or take too long.

Most link previews are built by a server-side crawler with a generous timeout. iMessage is different: the preview is assembled on the iPhone that sends the message, in the moment you paste the link. That one design choice explains nearly every grey box.

Why Apple fails where others succeed

  • Time budget — the device fetches your page while the sender watches. A server that takes several seconds to answer gets abandoned.
  • Redirects — long chains through link shorteners or tracking wrappers can exhaust the fetch before your page is ever reached.
  • Bot filtering — rules that block unknown user agents or require JavaScript return an empty shell, and the device has nothing to read.
  • Image fetch — the image is a second request. If it errors, redirects strangely or serves the wrong content type, you get text only or nothing at all.

What iMessage actually reads

The same og:title, og:description and og:image as everyone else, falling back to the title tag when they are missing. There is no Apple-specific tag to add — the fix is making the standard tags reachable, fast and absolute.

The fix list, in order

  • Confirm og:title, og:description and an absolute https og:image are in the served HTML, not injected by client-side JavaScript.
  • Paste the image URL into a browser directly. It must load the image file itself, quickly, with no redirect to a login or a CDN error page.
  • Shorten redirect chains — share the final URL, not a shortened one.
  • Check server response time for the page; aim for well under a couple of seconds to first byte.

Verify before you text it

Run the URL through the checker on this site first. It renders the iMessage card exactly as a recipient will see it and flags missing tags, relative image URLs and oversized images — the same failures that produce the grey box.
