Open Graph checker: test a link preview before you post

How to check your Open Graph tags before sharing: what to paste, what the grades mean, and the order to fix things in.

Key takeaways

  • An Open Graph checker reads your live meta tags and renders the card each platform will show — before your audience does.
  • Check in this order: image first, then title, then description, then the platform-specific gotchas.
  • A checker shows what the tags say; the platform debuggers clear caches after you fix them.

Every shared link is a tiny piece of advertising you did not design — unless you checked it first. An Open Graph checker fetches your page the way a platform's crawler would, reads the og: and twitter: tags, and shows you the rendered card for each platform while there is still time to fix it.

How to run a check

Paste the full URL into the checker on the homepage of this site and submit. The tool fetches the live page, parses every relevant meta tag, downloads the actual image to measure its dimensions and byte size, and renders cards for LinkedIn, Facebook, X, Slack, iMessage, WhatsApp and Discord side by side.

Read the results in this order

  • Image — the single biggest factor in whether anyone clicks. It must exist, load over https, and be at least 600x315.
  • Title — present, and under about 60 characters so no platform truncates it.
  • Description — 110–150 characters, and remember LinkedIn never shows it.
  • Platform gotchas — twitter:card for the large X layout, file size for WhatsApp, cache warnings for LinkedIn and Facebook.

What the grades mean

Green means the tag will work as intended. Yellow means it works but is weaker than it should be — a truncated title, an oversized image. Red means something a platform will ignore entirely: a missing og:image, a relative URL, an SVG. Fix reds first; they are the difference between a card and a bare URL.

After you fix: the cache step

A checker always reads the live page, but the platforms remember. LinkedIn caches a card for about a week; Facebook until you force a re-scrape. Once your tags pass, use LinkedIn's Post Inspector or Meta's Sharing Debugger to refresh the cache — then post.

Preview edits without deploying

On this site you can also edit the title, description and image inline and watch all seven previews update — a fast way to agree the wording before anyone touches the CMS.
